Speaking of political vitriol

People don’t believe me when I say that there’s no way to underestimate the anti-Clinton (both Clintons) vitriol out there. They really don’t. (See below.)

Of course, there are also loud groans of protest when I insist that, if he gets the nomination, Giuliani will win. These groans all come from New Yorkers, who understand how bad of a mayor he was, etc. (No way! It’s ridiculous! Like if Ed Koch tried to be president!)

Of course the problem is, the newspaper and pundit types ALSO are New Yorkers who already know all of that. So they don’t think it’s news, so they don’t report it. Unless something (like ShagFest) breaks, and in the right way, and BIG, the only thing Joe Sixpack is going to think about him is that he was “that guy who charged around NYC on 9/11″ and “America’s Mayor”.

And they’re going to think that until mid-October 2008, when most people start actively deciding for whom they will vote.

Good god.

This is, of course, leaving aside how cracked-out it is that someone walked in to a campaign office (ANY campaign office) and created a bomb scare/hostage situation.

I just want to say that I hope everyone at HRC’s office is OK, and that this was just some wack-job looking for a place with lots of people to scare and that nothing really bad happened/happens. I was pleased to see that she cancelled her speaking engagement and went off to do what she could about it. (Please god, no war room spin…)

Either way, it’s already generating the anti-HRC vitriol and it’s ugly, ugly stuff.

Tonight on the NewsHour, Ray was moderating the weekly “analysis of Shields and [Lowry]” (in for David Brooks). They talked about Mukasey and waterboarding. Then, Ray attempted to turn the conversation to the President’s statement that he would not nominate a successor to Gonzalez, if in fact Mukasey was not confirmed; and that he would be using more Executive Orders to get his policies enacted rather than dealing with Congress at all. (Gah!)

Lowry’s answer, after a perfunctory, “in [the] waning months…you saw the same thing with the Clinton Administration…you turn to executive orders.” (Clinton did it too!!!) Then, bizarrely, he said “Just to go back to waterboarding…I don’t think it’s torture.” (WTF! OK Rich, why don’t you sign up at SERE?) Then he reiterated that KSM is a bad, bad man and exposing him to “2 minutes of panic” is ok.

But Ray, in a priceless maneuver, turned to Shields with a wry smile, and said, “Oh yes, we were talking about the President and his relationship with Congress, before Rich took us back to torture.” Mark went on to make his curmudgeonly point: “The President has no relationship with Congress.” (][He's] for torture and against children’s health care”. Awesome!)

IMO, Lowry is a weenie and should be slapped down like that much more often!

(PS, why did Rich choose the word “straddle” in describing HRC’s debate performance. Not “equivocate”? Ay.)

HRC Backlash

Thank goodness I’m not the only one aware that such a backlash is, in fact, brewing — and not just from the right wing.

Sure, polls show she’s overwhelmingly popular in New York, but that has a lot to do with the fact that she has, in fact, been successful in delivering materially for the state’s various constituencies. But voters in other primary states haven’t benefited this way, so it seems obvious that there will be less residual good will to draw on.

Durp! Glad to see someone from the world of blogging and punditry has caught on.

Whatever. Are people finally beginning to realize what a BAD, BAD idea it would be to nominate Hillary in 08?

A BAD BAD IDEA. That is, NOT one the Dems should be thinking of implementing. Not because she’s a bad senator, or a bad person, or anything like that (in my mom’s neck of the woods she’s actually surprisingly popular), but rather because her name is, you know, CLINTON. I don’t think that the people who had no qualms about calling her innocent 12-year-old daughter Chelsea “ugly” will have any problems calling HRC all kinds of nasty things. Most of which will be believed by Joe Sixpack, of course.

Anyone else remember 1996-2000? Or am I the only one?

Right-Wing Sucker Punch

proof positive that hrc would be a FOOL, a FOOL, and a FOOL if she were to run for president. it’s started already. the character assaults on her will make the blue dress ordeal look like a punch and judy show. and it will destroy the democratic party on an organizational level if she were to actually win the nomination. her political career has been an INCREDIBLY divisive issue.

personally, i like to believe she is smarter than that….but who knows?
